I have read A LOT of fanfictions.
And here are some of the most popular grammar mistakes I found.
Seriously guys, it's not that hard. Some are really well written, but with this one mistake that just undermines the whole fic. So here's some advice to get it right.
And I'm always happy to offer advice on writing fan fiction, so if you want a second opinion on a piece of writing you did, don't hesitate to just send it my way
my english literature major might as well be useful lol
Is there a grammar mistake that just grates on your nerves? Comment below! First off, the most popular one.
You're = you are
Your = it's yours
If unsure, simply try replacing "you're" by it's complete form: "you are"
ex: You're him! You're the Doctor!
(--> You are the Doctor!)
I believe you've extended your welcome.Same process applies to
They're = they are
Their = it's theirs, indicates possession
ex: They're the best demon hunters in town.
That's their 67' Chevy Impala right there.If hesitant to try this method out, try this:
THEY'RE = THEY FUCKING ARE
THEIR = IT'S FUCKING THEIRSThere's also:
There = location, or fact
ex: The police box is just over there.
There is (or there's) no need to worry.Same goes for:
We're = we are
Were = past tense of you are (or werewolf)
Where = location
ex:We're lost, aren't we?
You said you were sure this was the right direction!
Where the hell are we? And who the hell are you anyway?
Now for these two:
n = indicates a consE
n = indicates a compA
ex:At first Thor decided to trust his brother, then he realized this probably wasn't the best idea.
Is Iron Man wealthier than Batman?
Two = the number
To = indicates motion
Too = also, or excessively
ex:I've got two dollars in my pocket, is it enough to buy a ticket for the Avengers: Age of Ultron showing?
Sorry for being late, I was too busy watching this new show called "Cooking with Hannibal and Gordon Ramsay".
It will always be too soon to talk about Firefly's cancellation.
Loose = not fixed in place
Lose = not keeping it
ex:Castiel's tie is always coming loose.
I don't want to lose you. Or your extensive DVD collection.
Affect = action (verb) -> To affect
Effect = consequence (noun) -> the effect
ex:How could I have known that my actions would affect the Dragon Age universe so much? How could I have predicted their effect on my favorite characters?
Could've = Could have
Should've = should have
ex: I should've known my favorite character would die gruesomely in Game of Thrones.
That's it for the Grammar corner! I felt like I had to do this at some point, it was just nudging at me
For those who have been out of Wifi these past weeks, here are some news that might interest all us Geeks
- Most of you are probably already aware that both Leonard Nimoy
(aka Old Spock) and Terry Pratchett
have recently passed away.
I find comfort in the fact that they both lived full lives and left us a priceless legacy.
Here's a quote from Death itself ("Good Omens"):
‘DON’T THINK OF IT AS DYING,’ said Death. ‘JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.’
- Jason Momoa
(aka Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones) is Aquaman!! And his costume looks badass.
- Both Zachary Quinto (aka young Spock, or Sylar from Heroes) and Richard Armitage (Thorin) have joined the cast of Hannibal!
I CANNOT WAIT
For those of you who had requested a Tutorial on how I lineart and use Copic Markers, sorry about the wait, I haven't forgotten!
I already have a page of general Lineart advice done, but I realized there's so much more I want to say(and I've recently been practicing other styles), so I'll be submitting a Journal at the same time
with useful books and links, etc..
If you have any questions or stuff you'd like me to approach, just say the word ^^
